One morning in October I was admitted to the BMI Coombe wing at Kingston Hospital for an emergency gallbladder operation - in severe pain, constantly vomiting and feeling extremely ill and scared. The very nice consultant surgeon Mr Jean Deguara took charge, examined me and I was immediately connected up to antibiotic, anti-sickness and other drips. He couldn't have been kinder or more reassuring, promising me that he would operate and remove my gallbladder ( which according to the ultrasound scan, was on the point of bursting), just as soon as a theatre became available, however late at night that might be. In fact I did have to wait until that evening but he popped in to see me at regular intervals to keep me informed and to make sure I was as comfortable as I could be. After the operation he came to my room and explained to my husband and family exactly what had been done in surgery. The following morning when I was properly awake he outlined what to expect during my recovery, answered my questions fully and sensitively and gave me a follow up appointment for a month's time. When I saw him last week, he said I had recovered very well and I thanked him for the excellent treatment he had given me at an extremely unpleasant and worrying time.

I was admitted as an emergency with acute pancreatitis secondary to gallstones late on a Friday. Mr Deguara and his team were very responsive to my situation, coming to see me on the Saturday and organising treatment and pain relief. Every effort was made to get me a quick ERCP at another hospital. My only negative experience during my hospital stay was some confusion around whether it was safe for me the have an MRCP. In the end I was left for 12 hours without water and 24 without food. I think this situation was compounded by the change over in junior doctors, resulting in conflicting instructions to the nursing staff. I recovered quickly and arranged for Mr Deguara to remove my gallbladder at a later date. My only other negative experience was when there seemed to be no provision for follow up after subsequent ERCP at St George's Hospital Tooting. As I was not on any list, I seemed to have disappeared. Many phone calls were required to get results. My gall bladder was removed at the New Victoria Hospital at a later date and the surgery went very well. I learned later that Mr Deguara was rather concerned about what he might find and also because of the size of the gallstone. My recovery has been event free, barring an allergic reaction to the skin glue, and life is back to normal. I was very happy with my care and with the outcome. My only caveat to that is the rigidity of the NHS systems, which once you fall outside of particular narrow parameters, it is a struggle to get a resolution.

Mr Deguara was kind, courteous and considerate. He informed me of all the potential complications of my operation. The surgery was carried out well and efficiently, and I have had no problems since. My treatment in the Combe Wing Ward of Kingston Hospital by all the staff was excellent. Altogether a great result.

Mr Jean Deguara operated on my hernia, he explained everything to me in great detail he is a very pleasant man I would not hesitate in recommending him, hopefully I will not need another operation but if I did I would want him again as my surgeon.
